DisneyQuest will close July 3 to make way for The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort.
Walt Disney World announced back in June 2015 that the interactive gaming center would close in 2016 as part of Downtown Disney’s transformation into Disney Springs. The attraction’s demise was extended last November and this is the first time a closing date has been set.
The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will be “a one-of-a-kind basketball-themed experience featuring hands-on activities that put guests of all ages right in the middle of NBA game action,” according to the Disney Parks Blog.
The 80,000-sqaure-foot attraction will include a restaurant and retail store.
NBA City, a themed tourist restaurant at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk, closed in August 2015 and was replaced by the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium.
DisneyQuest’s unique mix of arcade games and virtual reality experiences lasted nearly three decades. It opened in Downtown Disney in 1988 and was planned as the first of several chains built to appeal to people who could not visit a theme park.
The second DisneyQuest was built in Chicago but closed in 2001 due to low attendance. Following the closure, DisneyQuest projects in Philadelphia, Toronto and Disneyland Resort in California were canceled.
