Disney has released new details on the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, including the names of its two rides and new teaser footage.
The overall themes of the two attractions had been known for quite some time. At the D23: Destination D event at Disney’s Contemporary Resort on Saturday, Bob Chapek, the head of Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products division, unveiled the names for the two rides — Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
Rise of the Resistance, which Chapek called “the most immersive ride we’ve ever built,” guests will assume the role of Resistance troops captured and imprisoned by the First Order on a Star Destroyer having to fight their way to freedom during a “full scale battle” between the two sides. First Order villain Kylo Ren will be featured in the attraction.
For Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, riders will be assigned one of three different roles in piloting the ship, as the name implies, on a smuggling mission. As previously revealed in an exclusive special feature on the Blu-ray for “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” smuggler Hondo Ohnaka from various “Star Wars” animated series will make an appearance along with Chewbacca.
“With the fastest ship in the galaxy and with cargo to move, all that’s needed is a flight crew,” Chapek said. “That’s where you come in.”
Adding to the overall atmosphere in Galaxy’s Edge, Chapek announced new original music from legendary film composer John Williams will be featured in the land.
Die-hard “Star Wars” fans will have to trek out to California if they want to be among the first to experience the new attractions. The Disneyland version of Galaxy’s Edge will open in the summer of 2019, followed by a fall 2019 opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
