Tampa Electric Co. and Legoland Florida marked Earth Day by announcing the utility company plans to build a $5 million solar canopy in the Lakeland theme park.

The canopy will generate nearly 2 megawatts of power – enough to power more than 250 homes annually – for Tampa Electric’s 725,000 customers, including Legoland. The project will also double as a shade for more than 600 cars in the attraction’s parking lot.

The solar array, which will be owned and maintained by Tampa Electric, is one of many Earth-friendly projects taken on by Legoland, including another 30-killowatt solar panel grid atop the park’s Imagination Zone.

Among the other initiatives are a pair of electric car charging stations at the resort’s hotel, a Lego brick recycling program, and soap donations to Clean the World, a Florida nonprofit group that distributes recycled hygiene products from the hotel industry to homeless shelters and developing countries.
