Calling it a “necessary step,” Legoland Florida has announced they will be laying off employees due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement provided to Theme Park Tribune, Legoland said:
“As we continue to navigate through these unpredictable times, we have made the difficult decision to restructure our business operations, resulting in the reduction of workforce across the Resort. This decision was not made lightly and was decided on only after several other measures were taken, including operational adjustments, salary reductions, and temporary furloughs. This is a necessary step that will allow our Resort to be more reflective of the uncertain environment we are currently operating within. We are saddened to say goodbye to each of these employees and appreciate the impact this has on them and their families. We will extend health coverage through July 31, 2020. Additional benefits are based on an individual’s position and tenure.”
Asked how many employees were being laid off, Legoland senior public relations manager Kelly Hornick told Theme Park Tribune, “Out of respect for the individuals affected, we are not disclosing the numbers or positions. We are genuinely saddened to say goodbye to each of these employees.”
Legoland reopened on June 1 after the pandemic shut the resort down in mid-March. Its reopening plan included limiting attendance to 6,000 guests, 50 percent of its usual capacity, along with encouraging physical distancing, adding hand sanitizer stations, and requiring temperature checks for all employees and guests.
Unlike other Central Florida parks, Legoland is not requiring guests to wear face masks, though their use remains recommend and the park is providing disposable masks free of charge.
Legoland is the second Central Florida theme park to announce layoffs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Universal Orlando, which also reopened in June, let go an unspecified number of workers on June 23.
