The new Lost Island theme park in Waterloo, Iowa will open in 2022 with a dark ride housed in a volcano.

Called Volkanu — Quest for the Golden Idol, the interactive, trackless ride is designed by Sally Dark Rides, the veteran firm behind dark rides such as the Justice League: Battle for Metropolis attractions in the Six Flags chain.

The ride will reside in the fire-themed Mura realm of the 75-acre park, inspired by a fictional god of fire. The four-minute experience will include screens as well as physical sets and animatronics.

“This is going to be a one-of-kind, superlative, interactive dark ride,” said Sally Dark Rides CEO and chairman John Weaver.

The Sally Dark Rides booth at the IAAPA Expo is showing off one of the ride’s animatronics, a character known as the Shaman.

Lost Island was been tight-lipped about its ride lineup and other specifics about the park, which is being built next to the existing water park, both owned by the Bertch family. The themed “realms” were only revealed in August.

One other ride that has been confirmed is a Intamin launch coaster formerly known as Kanonen, which Lost Island purchased from Sweden’s Liseberg amusement park.

The Lost Island theme park is scheduled to open in summer 2022.
