A brand new theme park in Waterloo, Iowa managed to beat the mighty Disney in Amusement Today magazine’s Golden Ticket Awards.

In the Best New Family Attraction category, the award went to Volkanu: Quest for the Golden Idol, an interactive, trackless dark ride at Los Island Theme Park. It managed to beat out Disney World’s newest family ride, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at Epcot, which took second place.

Despite the praise for Volkanu, Lost Island’s first season ended early due to low attendance. Park general manager Eric Bertch told KWWL that for 2023, Lost Island will look to start hiring earlier and open its Intamin launch coaster, Matugani.

While Disney was upset in one category, it did claim two other Golden Ticket Awards. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance was named Best Dark Ride and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind was awarded Best New Attraction Installation.

In other awards, the Publisher’s Pick for Park of the Year went to Kings Island. Amusement Today acknowledged the park “because of its important history and its perfect celebration of it” in 2022, referring to Kings Island’s 50th anniversary.

Other honorees included Iron Gwazi at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay winning Best New Rollercoaster and Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania winning Best Family Park for the third year in a row.

As it did last year, Dollywood won the most individual awards with three: Best Kids’ Area, Best Christmas Event and Best Guest Experience. Its fourth award in 2021, Most Beautiful Park, was reclaimed by Busch Gardens Williamsburg this year.
