Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston are returning to Universal Orlando this fall, as the Ghostbusters will be the stars for one of the houses at Halloween Horror Nights.
The house wasn’t exactly a well-kept secret, as Ghostbusters had been featured on “speculation maps” on fan sites and Universal appeared to accidentally spoil the surprise through a Twitter video. Universal confirmed Ghostbusters mazes for both its Hollywood and Orlando HHN events Wednesday.
The house will be based on the original 1984 film, not the critically well-reviewed, but financially unsuccessful, 2016 reboot that drew review-bombing campaigns in reaction to its all-female cast.
“In each maze, guests will follow in the footsteps of the Ghostbusters – Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston – as they venture through artfully recreated scenes from the film, including the firehouse, New York Public Library and the Temple of Gozer, as an army of ghoulish spirits, hideous specters and ectoplasm-dripping phantasms attack from every corner,” Universal said in a press release. “As they delve deeper into the maze, guests will come face-to-face with an array of paranormal creatures, from the voracious Slimer to the all-powerful Gozer the Gozerian and in its ultimate destructor form – the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, to brave the demonic spirits and survive the night.”
Ghostbusters have a long history with Universal Orlando. The Ghostbusters Spooktacular special effects show was housed in Universal Studios Florida’s New York section from the park’s opening in 1990 until 1996. Part of this show’s firehouse facade remains in place today, now serving as a small tunnel for the coaster track for Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
The franchise was also used for two street shows at Universal Studios Florida: StreetBusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.
Universal still has four houses left to announce for the 2019 edition of Halloween Horror Nights. This year’s event will be the longest ever, running 41 nights from Sept. 6 through Nov. 2 at Universal Studios Florida. It will also reprise last year’s ‘80s theme, though not all houses and scare zones will be connected to the decade.
