Universal Studios Hollywood will build a roller coaster themed around the “Fast & Furious” franchise, the park announced Wednesday.

Like so many other Universal attractions in recent years, the coaster has been widely discussed by Alicia Stella of Theme Park Stop, who first discussed rumors of the project in May 2022. ParkFans.net, known for breaking news about SeaWorld projects, reported last month that it had obtained the layout for the new coaster, showing the ride weaving alongside the hillside separating the park’s Upper and Lower Lots.

Screamscape had reported in May 2022 that the ride would utilize a “controlled spinning system” and would be built by Intamin, the same firm Universal has used for other recent coasters, including Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal Islands of Adventure.

Universal itself, however, confirmed little about the ride in its press release, not even providing concept art to the media.

“Equipped with a state-of-the-art ride system uniquely created to engulf guests within the dynamic ‘Fast & Furious’ universe, this all-new roller coaster will benefit from Universal Destinations & Experiences’ decades-long expertise in revolutionizing the development of the contemporary roller coaster across its global theme park destinations,” the company said in a statement.

The coaster is rumored to be named Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift and would be the third coaster overall at Universal Hollywood. No official opening date has been set, but the ride will take over space once occupied by the Animal Actors and Special Effects stage shows which closed earlier this year.
